ChkDsk on Windows 10 2004 and now 20H2 is not really the app we know from the past. It seems that there are still some bugs that need to be fixed in ChkDsk for Windows 10 20H2. Martin Brinkmann on ghacks.net, like many others, reports that there is probably still a bug in ChkDsk that deserves attention. It seems to be related to Microsoft’s last December update KB4592438. Reports suggest that using ChkDsk on devices may damage the file system and cause blue screens on the first reboot of the system after using the ChkDsk operation.
The analysis provided the following information:
- Systems with Windows 10 20H2 appear to be affected.
- The issue seems to affect Solid State Drives. One user reported that a VM system with a platter-based hard drive was affected as well.
- The cumulative update KB4592438, released on December 8, 2020, as part of the December 2020 Patch Tuesday, seems to be the cause of the issue.
